Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We need some new novels in our AP Literature class. I gave the students summaries of a few books, and they voted on Kurt Vonnegut's modern classic Slaughterhouse-Five.

We're going to dig deep into the themes of the seeming inevitability of war, dealing with trauma, and literature and satire as coping skills.

In keeping with AP Lit prep, we'll look at the very unique structure of the novel, we'll discuss the impact of characters big and small, we'll evaluate the narrator and his potential biases, and we'll find thematic messages that will hopefully resonate with students.

My students live in tough neighborhoods and have big hearts and bigger dreams. A new class set of novels will give them a sense of pride and perhaps help them see the value of a good book. I've been working to diversify and modernize the literature we read, and S-5 will bring our story analysis to the 20th century (which is an upgrade) and help us to discuss the themes mentioned above.
