My Students

I love the world that opens up when I have conversations with my students about themes and topics that come about after reading a novel together. My sixth grade students are inquisitive young adults who hunger for new information and because most of them come from low income homes, they lack a wealth of novels at their disposal.

My goal is always to expose my amazing students to at least 5 novels a year and have rich discussion about the historical content or theme from the novels we read.

When a new novel is introduced to the students, they get so excited about what will happen and the background of the story that it literally transports them and they are hooked! Each time we delve into a novel and explore the history of it or themes that emerge, the student's lives are transformed and they grow. It's a wonderful thing to witness!

My Project

Students will be able to read the novel "A Long Walk to Water" to understand the struggle of the Sudanese people as well as "Out of My Mind" where they are exposed to the life of someone with cerebral palsy and their struggle to live a normal life. These novels will be read both in class and at home.

When my students read a great novel and they are transported to another place and time, the experience is priceless!

Providing students with a rich novel expands their vocabulary, helps them to see beyond their world and instills in them a love of learning!
