Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. Our students are goal-oriented and focused on achieving their goal of college. For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Their self-image improves, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students. Many will be the first college graduates in their family. AVID students are highly motivated, yet many see college as a goal that could be hard to attain due to financial reasons. Many are first-generation college students. Not only is this eye-opening for the students, but this can be a life-changing moment for the families and siblings when they see the opportunities for scholarships and funding available to them. Many of our students have never traveled out of Phoenix, so the idea of seeing NAU or U of A shows them the possibilities for success in front of them.
My Project
These supplies are greatly needed! The notebooks will help our students track our information that they learn throughout the four years of high school, and the novels will broaden our knowledge in our reading classes!
Getting to add to our classroom library will broaden my student's knowledge about the world and people around them.
Each item will benefit a specific child who has a certain interest in my class. Each time a student picks a new novel to read, I know that they are learning lessons that they will take with them once they leave my classroom and beyond. Thank you!
