Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are remarkable and hard-working. We work together in a Title I school to meet and exceed grade-level academic performance. My students come from many different backgrounds with many different life experiences. We incorporate the rich cultures of each student and their families into our classroom and our learning. My students persevere through challenges they face from circumstances out of their control. Some of these circumstances are due to difficulty accessing resources due to socioeconomic situations.

No matter the challenges my students face, we work together to lift, encourage, and support one another to live our best lives and to achieve each goal we set for ourselves.

I am proud of my remarkable students and I am proud to be their teacher.

My Project

Literature is fundamental in my 5th grade classroom. Literature is used daily in my classroom to practice and enhance literacy skills and to access current and historical information. I have found that novel studies are a wonderful way to engage my students in a particular topic and to guide them in developing reading, writing, and processing skills.

"Blood on the River" will allow for a historical fiction novel study that will build literacy skills and develop a greater understanding of colonial and American Indian relations in 1607 James Town.

The students and I will participate in whole-class readings, guided discussions, and written responses. In conjunction with literacy skills, the students will learn about the beginning of what became known as the United States of America. This is a core social studies standard for 5th graders in our state. They will learn about the perspectives and struggles of the first colonists and the Algonquian Indians and how their relations evolved over time. They will analyze information and character changes, they will debate various positions taken by the characters, and they will make connections to their own lives.

I strive to use literature daily in my teaching. I also strive to do my best to teach my students about historical periods and diverse perspectives. By having a classroom set of "Blood on the River," I will be able to achieve both of these goals.
