Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th grade students come from a small high poverty city in the Coachella Valley. My class will be the first Dual Language class in our elementary school that has been a part of the bilingual program since Kindergarten. In fact, I was their kindergarten teacher as well and I am exicted to help them finish their elementary dual language experience.

Not only do my students come from high poverty households but they are also the first 6th grade class to complete our school's dual language program.

Our school is over 100 years old and is the center of the community with over 90% of our students being English Language Learners (with Spanish being their first language) as well as migrant students of parents that work in the agriculture of the Coachella Valley. Because of our low income population, school supplies, such as novels/chapter books, are hard to come by.

My Project

My class has just finished listening to the read-aloud of "The One and Only Ivan" and they were really engaged as I read it. This fantasy genre caught their interest. We have picked "The Wild Robot" as a follow up book because of its genre as well as the wonderful message of friendship it portrays.

However, my students would appreciate having thier own copy of "The Wild Robot" and be able to read-aloud together.

This would make our novel/chapter book study for meaningful as students can continue thier reading at home and share with their families. Also, this will enable them to work on stem projects at school and at home related to the book at thier own pace. We are really excited about all the possibilities.
