My Students

Our school is a public school in an urban and low-income community in Chicago.

Our amazing school has students from more than 60 countries.

Some have been here for a while; others just came to the States a few months ago. With this comes the challenge of providing reading material for students of all levels. With distractions all around us, we know how important sitting and focusing on a text is and how difficult that can be.

I would like to start off the year with a novel study, a common text we can read together that will help set a foundation for all the reading skills.

My Project

We would love to have a novel study for all of 4th grade, using the book, "Mr. Popper's Penguins."

This book is one that students can read and understand independently, adding an engaging and fun element to their reading!

It will set a good foundation for their learning by applying what we will be learning about all year with a real-life example: their own novel! By having their own novel, they are able to annotate and write in it, while highlighting key skills and forming their own ideas.

This is an engaging text that can be referenced as the year goes on as well.
