Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading can be fun for students when they enjoy what they read. They do not realize that they are learning everyday with reading. I teach 6th grade in an inner-city school where many of my students do not want to learn or read. However, I recently realized that the students enjoy reading novels and their attention is focused since it is something they enjoy.

We recently read from our textbooks a short version of the book Number the Stars and I could not believe their enthusiasm while reading this. The students were asking questions, participating in discussions and eager to learn more about the book. Unfortunately, there is no money for supplies in our school and I want to continue reading this novel as well as a couple more during the year since they enjoy it and learn.

In order for this to happen all students need a copy of the story, Number the Stars and The Tale of Despereaux, not only to follow along, but to be able to use it as a reference when asked questions for comprehension. This will help the students by allowing them their own copy to use during the duration of the unit. I create differentiating lessons by having the students create projects or assignments that relate to the story by choosing what projects they want to complete. They stayed focused during their work and enjoy sharing with the rest of the class. This gives them the feeling of success.
