Help me give my students healthy snacks during the school day to help them stay focused, energized, and ready to learn despite the challenges of poverty and hunger.
I’m an 8th grade science teacher in Durham, North Carolina. My students are curious, resilient, and capable of amazing growth—but many face challenges no child should have to deal with. This project will provide healthy, individually packaged snacks like granola bars, fruit cups, crackers, and trail mix to help my students stay focused and energized throughout the school day. As a teacher in a high-needs school, I know first-hand that many of my students' basic needs are not met on a daily basis.
Poverty, violence, trauma, family hardship, and homelessness are very real for them.
Despite our best efforts to encourage self-care and academic focus, it’s often impossible for hungry students to concentrate or perform at their best. Hunger shouldn’t be a barrier to learning. By meeting this basic need, I can give my students a better shot at success—not just academically, but emotionally and physically too. A healthy snack might seem small, but to a student who didn’t have breakfast or isn’t sure where their next meal will come from, it’s a big deal. This project helps level the playing field. It shows them they are seen, supported, and worthy of care—every single day.
