I teach middle school English language learners from all over the world. They are refugees with a new life ahead of them. They are from impoverished nations and they're here for better opportunities. They've left everything behind to be reunited with their families. They are part of our community, of which over 70% qualify for free and reduced-cost lunch.
My students have to work twice as hard.
They are working to master content while they learn English. They are smart and capable and full of potential.
Quarantine isn't cool. Especially if you're a middle schooler. On our daily Zoom chats, they ask me about whether or not they'll have to repeat a grade and if they will lose all the skills they've learned this year. They're stressed and worried. All I can tell them is to keep doing their best. Keep trying to do their Google Classroom assignments.
And most of all, keep reading.
Reading for pleasure every day will keep building their comprehension and vocabulary skills so they don't fall even more behind. And it's a wonderful way to escape reality, which we all need now more than ever!
This isn't just a book for them to read. Hand selecting books and delivering them to their doorsteps one way that I can let them know that I'm thinking about them, that I miss them, and that I care. I selected each of these books specifically for individual students, so I know they'll love them, and hopefully it makes them feel loved as well.
