Our virtual classroom is filled with resilient, energetic, creative fourth graders who will not let anything stand in their way of learning. I am a proud teacher of this diverse group of students, ranging in backgrounds, race, income, gender, ability levels, and learning styles. All who are simply looking for a chance to be successful. Our school is a Title I school where many of our students come from low income/ high poverty households.
During a school year like no other, I am determined to give my students the tools they need to succeed and to provide them with the education they deserve. My classrooms is filled with kinesthetic learners who thrive off of learning infused with movement. During past years, I have enjoyed incorporating centers, flexible seating, and movement in all my lessons. This year, that ability to move has been limited. For hours on end, my students are required to remain in their seats, with their masks on, facing forward. For anyone, this can be a challenge, let alone young 4th graders. Individual bike pedals will give my students the opportunity to get their energy out and focus while remaining socially distant from others.
This project also contains various read aloud books that would be added to our classroom library.
This group of fourth graders are extremely curious and pay attention to the world around them. I am greeted in the morning with questions concerning equity, diversity, political movements, the virus, etc. I hope to make these more complex concepts accessible to my students through books. These titles are a mix of fiction and nonfiction works and highlight characters that my students can "see themselves in". I plan to add these texts to our "traveling library". Our library is in the process of being made accessible to students at home. Despite all this uncertainty, one thing that has remained a constant this year is my students love of reading. I am ecstatic at the idea of getting physical books delivered to my students. This will help create a small sense of normalcy for these young learners.
