Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of our school's music goals is to have one mallet instrument per student in the music classroom. Right now, we have nineteen and our max class size is twenty-four. Having two additional glockenspiels in our music classroom will provide more opportunities for students to study various pitched percussion, equalize the balance/blend of our mallet ensemble, and help with the quickening of the pace of instruction. In our school's music classroom, we explore and perform music using the Orff-Schulwerk methodology, which helps students to use their speech and language skills/knowledge in learning rhythm patterns, steady beat, artistic movement, using instruments, and singing. This approach has led to an academic renewal with their collective student voice and ownership as an artful music making community.
Currently, we have two soprano glockenspiels and the curriculum we use advocates for four to be used in order to fully implement the music that aligns with our state music standards.
Having an adequate amount of glockenspiels allows for our younger students to explore sounds and rhythms with creative play. Our older students can use them while singing, rhythmically speaking, playing instrumental ensembles, and accompanying themselves in their movement/dance studies. Thus, students develop deeper levels of understanding when they are engaged in experiential learning, self-reflection, and express their ideas and knowledge. Making this project come alive would help us in giving every child an opportunity to have success and every voice be heard.
