Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students and community I serve come from diverse backgrounds and often low-economic households where over 70% of the student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch making it hard for me to ask the community to help fund classroom items.
When my students come to music I hope to create an environment that allows everyone to learn while having fun, feeling safe, and offering creative outlets for students to engage and connect with an art form that brings us together- Music.
Because I am a 'Specials' educator and not a general classroom educator it is even more difficult for me to ask students and their families to help bring in classroom essentials (pencils, tissues, etc.); because of this, my budget must be split between these classroom necessities and musical additions (instruments, manipulatives, new music, etc.) used to enhance and broaden our learning experiences. Funding a project like this on a platform like DonorsChoose allows my program to grow in ways it could not normally do so.
My Project
In the music classroom in my building I see everyone in our school; 600+ students as young as four and as old as eleven. Teaching different ages and grade also means I teach a wide variety of musical concepts.
In this project I am asking for items that can help each grade in various different ways, providing different musical and learning opportunities across the wide content, age, and ability gap.
The NoteKancks are a new product that allows students to visualize and learn about rhythms in a tangible and creative way.
The Log Drum and Large Kokoriko will be welcomed additions to our growing percussion section, allowing students to have the opportunity to make music with instruments they may have never seen or experienced before.
The Guitar Pick punch will allow us to create limitless picks for our new ukulele program and make it easier for students to play and enjoy our new instruments.
The pack of ukulele strings will be used to replace the one ukulele our school owned before I taught there so that we can have an additional working instrument in our inventory.
