Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My high school students will lead Schoolyard Science Explorers as a community service project, mentoring elementary students through hands-on science activities on their own school campus. Younger students will explore nature during weekly observation walks and record their findings in personal science notebooks, fostering curiosity, environmental awareness, and critical thinking.
The donation of notebooks is a key component of the project’s success.
These notebooks will empower each child to fully participate, document their discoveries, and track their progress over time. Having their own dedicated science notebook not only builds a sense of ownership and pride in learning, but also ensures equity so that all students—regardless of background—can engage meaningfully in scientific inquiry.
Together, this student-led initiative promotes mentorship, strengthens STEM education, and unites the school community through a shared commitment to learning and environmental stewardship.
