This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year my students taught me the importance to humanize my classroom to ensure that they feel safe and represented in the classroom. Given this, I’ve been trying to incorporate different resources that will allow for a deeper sense of learning that incorporates their funds of knowledge. Instead of traditional note-taking, I will be implementing an interactive notebook that allows for diverse forms of understanding science concepts such as sketch notes, foldables, and manipulatives, that allow students to express themselves without being restricted to the traditional form of note-taking.

Through your support, students will be able to grow in their STEM identity and engage in a deeper sense of learning through the interactive notebooks they will be using throughout the year.

The use of notebooks will also promote student choice as they create personalized notes and ultimately empower them to become more independent in the learning process.

I teach mainly Black and Brown students who have been traditionally erased and marginalized within STEM spaces. Hence, my role is to promote student agency by using notebooks that will be creative and customized to highlight their knowledge.

Through your support, students will have interactive notebooks that will allow them to organize their thoughts as we meet daily to build on their previous knowledge as well as help prepare them for our projects and assessments.

I know that this resource will be an essential tool in our STEM classroom.
