This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every class session is an opportunity for learning, whether it's teacher or peer led. My students are focused and ready to learn and know to ask me what the objective for learning that day is. From there, we take a textual journey of awareness, analysis, and enjoyment.
I have some of the best students in Chicago!
They want to learn and are up for any challenge I present to them. We are in the heart of a Chicago neighborhood where two dynamics exist, affluence and poverty, and they reside a few blocks from each other. I teach three 8th grade classes, a gifted class and two regular education classed. I don't like the labels that have stuck with the classes since enrollment and I challenge every student with the same high standards. I modify my curriculum either up or down but it is my goal to use the same text so that everyone I teach will be ready for high school literature classes when they leave me.
My Project
This summer I visiting a company that was inviting as soon as you walked through door. There were blackboards throughout that allowed you to say what you were thinking or what the company should be talking about and ways to do mental health checks without embarrassment.
I left there feeling like my students would be better humans if they could learn in an environment similar to the one I visited!
8th grade can be a confusing time for burgeoning teens where there is a lot of change. Providing a space for students to feel comfortable in expressing what and how they feel could go a long way invigorating the academic and creative flow for every student.
