This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students live by the C.A.R.E.S. core values - Caring, Appreciative, Responsible, Empathetic, and Steadfast. All of our students show grit and determination even in the face of uncertainty. Every day our children show up and we do our best to guide them in their learning process.

Recently, due to mandates and protocols, schools have been left short-handed and specialty classes like art are suffering.

Art is like therapy for my students. We have so many talented budding artists but instruction has been challenging as our art teacher is unable to continue teaching at this time. My students are longing for a creative outlet to manage how they are feeling with all of the changes to their first official year back in the classroom since the start of the pandemic. And we need some classroom art supplies and games to get us through.

My Project

Our students live in the South Bronx. We are in the heart of the "Concrete Jungle". Our school sits very close to highways with lots of noise from cars that go by. Unfortunately, when inclement weather prevents our students from going outside they really suffer. Their stamina plummets on indoor recess days. They have a hard time concentrating and we have found that students act out in different ways because they have a hard time verbalizing what exactly they are upset about.

When days like this happen, arts and crafts projects and learning games make life a little better and students make it through the day a little less angry.

They can channel that energy into being creative. There is a sense of community when students are given fun and engaging crafts to complete together. I love coming back in the room to see how they interpreted a fun painting or observing how persistent a student was in completing part of their latch hook project.
