My Students
While I am not a new special educator, I am new to the behavior support classroom for middle school students in my county. My students are placed in this program when they have significant interfering behaviors which prevents them from being successful in the general education classroom. The program helps students manage these behaviors by learning strategies to manage their emotions so they can be available for learning.
My students need someone to be their champion and advocate while they are learning self regulation and behavior management in a safe, comfortable environment to learn and grow.
My Project
Our Behavior Support Classroom is barren! This is my first year teaching in this particular classroom so my own supplies our limited (although I have spent LOTS of my own money to provide for our class). In addition, the classroom was moved from a portable outside the school to an inner classroom to meet the needs of one of the students. This means we went from a smaller space to a bigger space (which is awesome!) but our classroom has lost its safe, cozy feel (the room used to be an industrial arts room). My students are experiencing significant interfering behaviors which impact their ability to be successful in a general education room and need this environment to learn how to successfully manage their behaviors.
My students need this space to feel safe so they can thrive.
To help with this atmosphere, we need to large carpets to cover the tile floors and create safe spaces within our classroom. We would also like to have two stand up desks to help with the movement need of these children. Finally, we have several bean bag chairs for a "cool down" area but they are all in dire need of beans!
