Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Learning Community charter school is a public school that serves 400 creative students in grades K-6. High expectations for student achievement, strong partnerships with families and an emphasis on literacy as a tool for leadership are the hallmarks of our school. As the PE teacher it is my responsibility to motivate the children and to help them develop and maintain healthy life habits.
I am continuously working to extend the enthusiasm my students have for PE class to their lives beyond school.
I also want to involve their families in exercise to increase the fitness of the whole family. Many of our families live in congested urban areas with very little green space and few safe and inviting recreational areas and as a result, the incidence of childhood obesity is substantial.
I created Not Just Gym! to bring physical education to the home.
Based on input from students and their parents, a kit was designed which contains jump ropes, fitness routines, instructions for games often played during the gym period, a CD with music used in PE and a journal so that the students can keep a written record of their experiences while exercising. In addition, students received disposable cameras so that they could take pictures of themselves exercising at home. These simple materials are assembled in a Not Just Gym! tote bag. Each spring students and families in grades 2 and above receive the kits and are asked to record their exercise habits over four weeks. The program ends with a celebration and exercise prizes (soccer balls, basketballs) for students who performed exceptionally. All students keep the kit as an incentive to continue exercising. Recent research summarized by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation demonstrates that physical activity is an important contributor to academic excellence. In many cases, students who spend more time getting physical exercise do better on standardized achievement tests.
Not Just Gym! plays a critical role in helping students integrate physical activity into their day-to-day lives, in preparation for college and beyond.
Currently I have no regular funding to support this program, which has shown success. Many students increased their levels of physical activity. An entry from the journal of a third grade girl illustrates the program’s impact best: "Today I used the jump rope and the CD. I jumped a lot by myself and I did 75 jumps. Also I danced a lot with my big sister and it was fun.”
This idea was initially funded by a grant, but I need new kits for new families each year. You can help join the fight against childhood obesity and keep Not Just Gym! alive. Thank you in advance!
