Not Another Worksheet! Creative Assessments for Language Arts
My students need glitter pens, feathers, paper masks and other art supplies to bring our reading to life and help us escape overused assessments like worksheets and packets!

My Students
When you walk into my classroom, you will be met with 28 to 33 very different faces and facial expressions. More than three-fourths of my students come from diverse backgrounds, low income families, and homes where English is a second language. Looking at the list of students this past school year, 96% of the students who failed came from one of these backgrounds. This year I want to have all of the resources needed to help all of my students be successful. I want to shake up my assessments and allow my students to show their learning in new and creative ways.
My Project
Many of my students are brilliant kids who need the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of literature in more creative ways than essays, packets, and worksheets.
These supplies are going to be used to enhance the coming school year by adding fun, creativity, and diversity a subject that is especially hard for many students.
During first quarter, we plan to study perception and reality and have the kids create two-sided masks that show on the outside what people see when they look at them and on the inside what people miss when they judge only on appearance. Second quarter we will use the glitter pens, marker pens and other art supplies to create posters for an awareness fair on disabilities. Students will get to show their posters off to parents, family, friends, and the community. Third quarter, we will use these supplies to create 3-D plot diagrams and original children's books as we study the elements of a story, Fourth quarter, we will use what is donated to create playing cards as we study Greek mythology.
These are just the planned activities. Having these art supplies available will open the door for other creative assignments as the year progresses.
