Not All Learning Looks the Same!

Help me give my students sensory tools, flexible seating, and weighted blankets to meet special needs while learning!

My Students

Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.

My Project

I have several students in my class that have been diagnosed with ADHD or autism. As I learn more about my students and their individual needs, I realize that not all learning looks alike. A student who is bouncing in their seat may actually be learning. A student who is fidgeting with a pencil may actually be listening better because they are able to direct their extra energy toward this object.

As a teacher I want to meet my students where they are as learners to best support them; this can include providing a calming weighted blanket or a sensory toy to direct their fidgeting so they can focus their attention on content.

I am asking for two weighted blankets to help calm and aid students in feeling secure while on the carpet, two flexible seating disc for students to have a developmentally appropriate seating option, and a variety of sensory objects such as water beads, putty and fidgets to better serve their unique needs.
