I am so lucky to be the librarian at our school and help foster a love of reading with 450 children from kindergarten to 5th grade. Because many of our students come from low-income homes, the library is vital in providing our students with books to read outside of school.
During the pandemic, our students did not have the benefit of 'regular' reading instruction because of safety protocols, and they did not have reliable access to books.
Because of this, our school is working hard to catch our students up in reading.
My Project
Starting in kindergarten, our students are exposed to quality nonfiction. When presented with book choices, there's always an equal balance of fifty percent fiction and fifty percent nonfiction. This has caused nonfiction to FLY off the shelves.
The majority of beginning and reluctant readers prefer nonfiction.
With interesting photographs, small chunks of text and fun facts, who wouldn't? Students aren't required to check out just one fiction and one nonfiction book, so checking out TWO nonfiction books at a time is trending right now, especially with our kindergarten, first and second graders.
Unfortunately, demand is exceeding supply. These National Geographic beginning readers are perfect. They're sturdy enough to withstand the kids and SO popular, I've had to portion them throughout the week so everyone gets the opportunity to check the books out!
