Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are members of the Caminos, a K-8 dual language program here in Chelsea, MA. We are a community that loves music! It's such a blessing to explore and make music with these amazing students. ¡Los Amos! And they LOVE the guitar!

My students asked for me to incorporate learning guitar into our current music curriculum.

I have slowly been adding and using baritone ukuleles for this purpose, but my older students wish to expand by playing 6 strings instead of 4 on a larger instrument. I would love to be able to provide these for my students so we can expand the skill level of our content, and provide access for bigger instruments for them to play. Learning guitar has provided another avenue of connection, and celebration!, of the arts and culture of our community. Learning songs in both Spanish and English is increasing their decoding and reading comprehension skills, especially with our newcomers. Students will also compose their own songs to play. Composing the text provides a means of expressing themselves in addition to improving their literacy skills. Some of my students have experienced a great deal of hardship and challenges in their young lives. Writing their own songs has been a wonderful way for them to express themselves through music. With many who have family members who also play this instrument, we are reinforcing connections with family and community in our concerts.

We will be using these in our general music classes, and in our Bari ukulele (guitar) class. We will be playing these not only in our December and Spring concerts, but look forward to incorporating them in the music of our Chelsea 400th year anniversary celebrations! Any help you can provide would be so appreciated, thank you!
