My Project
These materials are necessary for MEHS art students to participate in the Northwest Coast Formline Carving and Block Printing Unit in our Art classes. The objectives for this Unit are that students will be able to:
1) Learn the basics of the Northwest Coast Formline directly from a local traditional artist.
2) Apply the basics of Northwest Coast Formline by creating their own designs
3) Learn basic Northwest Coast Formline carving skills from a local traditional artist
4) Carve their design into a rubber carving block
5) Block print their carved design using a variety of different types of paint and surfaces (paper and fabric)
6) Gain a deeper understanding of the Southeast Alaska region through learning about the local traditional art forms
In this Unit, students will have the opportunity to learn directly from a local traditional artist and design and create their own art using a place-based art form. They will also gain basic carving skills that they can later apply to carving wood or other medium. The basics of block printing learned in this Unit can be applied in future instruction. This type of culturally relevant curriculum helps students connect to place and local traditional art in a deeper way.
