My Students

Students need to be skilled in technology to compete in today's world. eBooks and eBook readers are a perfect way to combine students' love and need for technology with the importance of literacy.

I have been blessed with a group of students who love to read.

At our small, rural school, the 4th grade teachers loop to 5th grade with their class. This allows for a great sense of community within the classroom. My class consists of 9 boys and 5 girls, which means there is always some sort of activity going on. My school is a rural school serving roughly 250 students from Child Development to 5th grade. We are a Title-One school.

My Project

I am requesting 7 Nook eReaders for my classroom. By receiving these 7 Nooks, books will be at our fingertips. These Nooks will make it easier to find a variety of books that are of high-interest to my students. With the use of Nooks, I will be able to engage students in a variety of texts. The built in dictionary will help students develop important vocabulary, as well as learn dictionary skills. On any given day in my class, my students are reading 3 chapter books. I use chapter books during small group instruction during language arts. These chapter books are chosen for a variety of reasons, which include genre, vocabulary or a theme. I use historical fiction books during Social Studies instruction. My class has enjoyed the "My America" series, which takes place during a specific event in American history. Finally, books, magazines and newspapers are used during Science instruction.

This project is important because it will make allow my students to read a great variety of books, which will literally be at their fingertips.

The Nooks will make it easy for me to collect books that students enjoy reading.
