This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Engagement is a must in my classroom. Students have to be interested in the work. This is working for most of the students but there are a few who need extra motivation--particularly my reluctant readers who are not fond of traditional books.
I teach 10th and 9th graders at a at-risk high school right outside of Washington, DC.
For years, my school has been thought of as the "problem" school in our school district. We are making a change through hard work, higher graduation rates and student achievement!
My Project
I taught most of my 10th graders last year as freshmen. Many of them are working hard but there are a few who need more motivation. These Nooks I am hoping will be the key. My main purpose for them is to download the novels our class reads. My non-participants usually complain about the book. Seeing in an electric form should spark new interest and once I get them looking, I know I can get them to learn!
My principal always ask how are we incorporating technology into the classroom.
These Nooks will future this goal. The items will motivate many of my non-participants to learn--thus become active in their education, break the cycle of their parents and graduate from high school and attend college. I am a firm believer they just need encouragement in the right direction. This project might just save one of their lives.
