Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an urban elementary school in Washington, D.C. Our school is a dual-language school where over 70 percent of our population are English Language Learners, many of whom are first-generation Americans or recent immigrants, and 91 percent of our students are racial or ethnic minorities. Ninety-nine percent of our students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.
I teach a diverse, dynamic group of 3rd- and 4th-grade special education students who are inquisitive, imaginative, and driven to learn despite the economic, social, and political barriers our world throws at them every day.
My students have intellectual, emotional, and communication challenges that make accessing the general education curriculum difficult. Though many of them are performing two or three grade levels behind their general education peers, it is my job to provide them with the scaffolding, strategies, and encouragement they need to foster their love of learning and the ability to self-advocate for their needs.
My Project
Our building is small and teachers share a lot of space. For the past two years, I've taught my small groups in hallways. This can be challenging, as many of my students have difficulty focusing and staying on-task in public spaces. Additionally, many of my students are kinesthetic learners, and the rigorous nature of the 3rd- and 4th-grade curricula require them to sit and actively engage with work for longer than their stamina often allows.
Wobble Chairs will enable these students to sit in one place, build their reading and writing stamina, and receive direct instruction while still allowing them the freedom of movement they need.
Additionally, since many of my students lack fluency in foundational literacy and math skills, it's difficult for them to access grade-level curriculum. The use of Kindle Fire tablets with headphones will allow students to catch up their skills using math and literacy apps while I conduct individualized instruction with their peers. These tablets are small, portable, and, with the headphones, can allow for on-the-go, individualized instruction, no matter how busy or nontraditional the setting. The power strip will keep the tablets charged and ready to go.
Flexible seating combined with new technology options would help to make our learning space more cozy and comfortable, and motivate my students to stay focused, no matter where we set up our small-group shop.
