My Project

Nonfiction is a vital resource for elementary students as they eagerly explore a variety of subjects. However, in order to read nonfiction, they must be able to find nonfiction resources! By purchasing clear, interlocking bins, I will be able to restructure how our students explore the nonfiction area of our school library.

Revamping our nonfiction section will give students the power to locate informational texts quickly and efficiently.

Our students live in a rural area of southwest Missouri and attend a Title I school district. Due to our location and low income economy, many students do not get to participate in experiences that allow them to learn about the world around them. Reading nonfiction is a chance for them to explore new places, things, and ideas from their school and homes. I would love to provide them an environment where these materials are not only easily accessible, but visually stand out as well.

During each library class, our students eagerly search for nonfiction topics to help expand their knowledgebase; however, they struggle locating books they desire due to our current organization system. By organizing our nonfiction section in bins, students will be able to quickly and independently locate material that they find fascinating. This in turn, will increase circulation. Many studies have been conducted proving that students who read more, perform better academically. In addition to promoting nonfiction, this project aligns with our district's goal of increasing reading scores throughout our district.
