Nonfiction Texts Give Background Knowledge to Understand Fiction
Help me give my students engaging chapter books with nonfiction companion texts to build background knowledge!

My Students
Each day, second graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop critical thinking skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide quality literature, basic school supplies, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers but all of them are eager to learn.
My Project
Each day, I meet with students to read a book in a small group setting. These books vary by group, as we read something that is just above their reading level. By reading just above their reading level, I can help push them to become a better reader.
My highest readers are ready for more challenging books and are SUPER excited to get their hands on chapter books.
However, they lack the background knowledge to fully understand the texts they can easily read. In order to close this gap, I would like to provide these non-fiction texts to help them understand the major components of the fiction texts. The Magic Tree House series has such companion texts that will enable us to build knowledge and practice reading fiction at the same time. Additionally, I have chosen topics such as the Wild West, the Civil War, Jackie Robinson and historical heroes that will draw from their daily read aloud lessons.
This project would allow my students to have their OWN copy of a chapter book to read and learn from. These longer, more extensive books will push student thinking and enable them to grapple with more complex concepts to improve their comprehension. In the event that we are still virtual when these topics come up in our curriculum, students will receive these books by mail to keep!
