Nonfiction text: Learning real facts and information
My students need the Time For Kids Nonfiction Library to help assist in their exposure to nonfiction text. I am in need to incorporate more nonfiction text in my classroom library.
I currently teach 3rd grade students. I teach an inclusion classroom which includes students with ADHD, speech language disorders, and autism. My students work very hard on achieving their goals, no matter what struggles they may have.
The school where I teach houses many autistic students as well as English Language Learners.
My students love to read, work, and challenge themselves. My students tend to struggle more with non-fiction text, rather than fiction. II have a great deal of fiction books in my classroom library that is available for students to use. I feel that my students need more exposure to non-fiction books, to assist in their comprehension skills.
My Project
My students love to read and take AR tests. I have a significant amount of fiction books and chapter books in my classroom library. I have noticed that students struggle much more when it comes to reading and understanding nonfiction text. I feel that the more exposure and opportunities the students have to read nonfiction text, the more successful they will be when dealing with comprehension skills about nonfiction texts. The students are capable of reading higher and more challenging text. Nonfiction text is much more challenging that fiction. Instead of using simple stories to teach the standards, I would like to use nonfiction text when appropriate to achieve these goals. However, I need some help providing these nonfiction books for my students.
Donations to this project will allow my students to be exposed to different types of nonfiction text.
It will allow them to read more complex text, as well as, achieve the standards that need to be met. This will change my students lives in the future by getting them motivated to read more nonfiction texts, and being able to comprehend the texts. It will get them ready for the upper grades, as well as, the standardized tests.
