Nonfiction Novels Are Fun to Read, Too!

Help me give my students high-interest nonfiction novels to expand their reading repertoire.

My Project

This past year 75% of my students struggled to engage with nonfiction texts. Therefore, I am hoping to create small group text sets that will help them be excited to read nonfiction novels.

The plan would be for students pick a novel they are interested in reading and then participate in a small group novel study with friends or peers with similar interests.

Throughout the unit we will engage in mini-discussions about text structures, characteristics of nonfiction, and reading strategies based on their feedback and needs. I have engaged students in similar novel studies with fiction texts and have found that this is a great way to give students freedom and support within the classroom.

Many students are excited to read books when they can find a topic they like and have some autonomy. Thank you in advance for helping me share a love of reading with my students!
