My library media center serves the entire population of our K-5 school. It is a hub for learning and serves 19 classes a week and an additional enrichment block for each grade level.
My students primarily come from a Navy background.
Our school is located in the middle of Navy housing and serves between 340 - 380 students at any given time. Over 60% of our school community receives free or reduced-priced lunch. Regardless of frequent moves, our students and teachers are passionate and motivated to learn which lead us to winning a National Blue Ribbon for closing the achievement gap in 2016.
We offer several before and after school enrichment clubs including a CS-First Coding Club that I run each year. Our kids also love to read and are excited to get their hands on new library materials!
My students and teachers have been begging for new, updated nonfiction books in our library! Our PTO recently donated a few copies from the Who Was... series and I can't keep them on the shelf. Even my reluctant readers are snapping them up and asking for more. I'd like to have a larger set of these wonderful books to help update my collection. The topics range from famous biographies like Walt Disney, to places like the Grand Canyon, and even historical events like the sinking of the Titanic. With such a wide range of high-interest books I'd have something for everyone.
These books would not only engage reluctant readers, but would support the units that are being taught in our classrooms!
Our students study all of the topics that are in this set and often come to me asking for more information. Our nonfiction collection age is averaging somewhere between the late 1990s and mid 2000s so I can't always provide a current resource to our teachers. Many of our nonfiction books are so well-loved that they're losing pages and falling apart. These books would definitely update our collection and would get the kids excited to borrow library books again. We also need a few rolls of contact paper to cover and protect the new books so that they'll last through the heavy use for years to come.
