My Students

My students often never leave the town they live in. They are born here, raised here, and many have never left here. They are raised by parents who are both working, often at different times. They do not have the money to go on vacations, or even out of town. Every year we have students that are parents when the school bell rings for the day. They are going home to houses where they are the adult for the night. While at school, they get to enjoy being a kid, just being a teenager. There are some students who have both parents at home and do go on extravagant vacations, but they are few and far between.

Often times kids come to school to escape the reality waiting for them at home.

While in my room they know they are safe and comfortable. While in my room I offer them a chance to escape and enter new worlds, through books.

My Project

We are seeking two different materials. The first is a set of classroom headphones. The other is a class set of text sets.

Students in our district often cannot afford the required materials for class.

While we had headphones listed on the supply list, many come without. In the technological world that we live in, at least 50% of our instruction is done with computers. We have students complete online quizzes, listen to stories, complete interactive learning modules; all of these require headphones.

Sometimes there is a gap between different content areas in middle school teaching. We try our best to have the different content areas represented in all rooms. The best way do this, is in my language arts class students read nonfiction and fiction pieces that directly relate to the science and/or social studies topics they are currently studying. This text set will help us build that bridge.
