Nonfiction books play a vital role in ELA by broadening students' understanding of the real world, enhancing critical thinking, and developing informational reading skills. To my surprise, many students have recently expressed a strong interest in nonfiction, eagerly requesting books on topics they personally selected and were genuinely curious about. This unexpected enthusiasm highlights a shift in student engagement, as they actively seek to explore subjects like science, history, biographies, and social issues through texts that speak directly to their interests. Their desire to read nonfiction shows that when given choice and voice, students are more motivated and invested in their learning.
