My Students

How can you make a group of children excited about learning and reading? How do you have children become inquirers and explorers? How do you grow minds and produce lifelong learners? Introduce fun, exciting, real world non-fiction text. A yearly subscription to Time for Kids is what we need.

I have a group of 16 wonderful students who crave learning.

They enjoy learning about subjects that they can relate to and share with their friends and family. They are learning to become independent thinkers and researchers. Most of the students have a difficult time transitioning to a testing grade for many different reasons..it is my passion and duty to provide them with a learning experiences that they can relate to and have an equal passion for. I believe once you combine these two ingredients..learning has been achieved. My students come to me from many different backgrounds--they attend a PYP IB School that places a focus on becoming lifelong global learners.

My Project

Time For Kids is a excellent resource for a number of reasons: 1. It motivates children to read. 2. Children can connect to the issues that are addressed in the weekly magazine. 3. They are learning how to utilize non-fiction text features and text structure, which is a life-long skill. 4. Students become involved in the text. Activities that I have planned are: research activities, critical thinking debates, extended writing articles, text feature posters and games, comprehension and test prep, teacher and student made games, student-centered presentations and cooperative learning groups. My students will learn the value of reading and learn how to read and discuss what they are reading to their friends and family members. They learn how to become independent thinkers by generating their own personal opinions about topics that are happening in the world today.

In closing, children are so consumed with television, video games, iPod, Internet and all the valuable resources in the 21st century, but in this fast-pace society my students can take the information learned from the articles in class and have a conversation with their parents, grandparents, or just someone close to them.

They learn how to communicate, express and share what they are learning without even knowing it.
