This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class has thoughts of studying animals, space, and nature. The girls and boys want to read about elephants and cheetahs. They want to learn about scientists and explore space. The students want to awaken their imagination in nature.
Our second grade girls and boys attend a public school in a large urban city.
It is a Title I school with more than 60% of students receiving reduced rate or free lunch. The students come from a number of multicultural backgrounds. The children come to school each day enthusiastically ready to learn and thrive. Friendship and kindness is valued in our classroom. Respect and responsibility are valued in our school. Our school believes every child can learn to their full potential and our teachers and staff support their journey through a strong education.
My Project
My students need second grade nonfiction books, on a variety of subjects, including animals and astronomy, to develop their reading skills. Curious girls and boys will initially discover the excitement in reading the nonfiction books. Then the students will learn how to read these nonfiction books with headings, bold face print, captions, and photos. They will look and learn about how nonfiction has photographs of the real places, animals, or people. The children will be able to write and draw pictures in a book report.
A classroom that has a varied library of books gives a child opportunity to choose a book of their interest.
When child has lots of choice in books, they will read more. The more the students read, the better they read. Nonfiction books give children an understanding of a different genre...one that starts to prepare them for the higher grades.
