Nonfiction Books For My Curious Students

My students need 42 exciting nonfiction and graphic texts such as "Bill Nye the Science Guy's Big Blue Ocean" to select from our classroom library.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rainey's classroom raised $586

This project is fully funded

Who is Bin Laden? Why do tornadoes happen? How will we decide who the President will be? These are only a few of the many questions that I hear my students asking every day about the world around them. I teach English to curious, eager eighth graders in the Arkansas Delta.

Our school is 98% African-American. Almost 100% of the students receive free/reduced lunch. When you drive down the streets you can see some of the obstacles to learning that are present: overcrowded homes, random violence, lack of trust in neighbors, drug use, teenage pregnancy, etc. In spite of all of this, my students want to go to college, provide for their families and have successful lives. They have goals. It's my job to see that they also acquire the knowledge and skills they need to reach their goals.

I need nonfiction texts of all grade levels to add to my classroom library. Many of my students have been exposed to fiction stories, but not to recent, updated nonfiction. They have so many questions about the world around them. It will be empowering for them to be able to pick up a book and read the answers to their questions. I am especially excited about the Simon books, because they have very interesting topics and beautiful, full-page pictures. I am also requesting many nonfiction graphic books for my low-level readers, who love to read over and over again about Harriet Tubman in a comic book that is on our shelf.

Your donation will make it possible for a group of young, disadvantaged students to inform themselves about their world. They will improve their reading skills while preparing to be college students and American citizens.
