My Students
My students have access to thousands of fiction books, but we are will missing out on relevant nonfiction text. We need Time For Kids so that we can access nonfiction text that is on our level and stay up to date on current events.
My students are extremely hardworking and are climbing the mountain to college each and every day.
They attend an open enrollment, public charter school in Louisiana. Over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Over 75% of the students are reading at a 1st and 2nd grade reading level at the beginning of third grade.
My Project
Time For Kids will send 2 issues a month that are full of nonfiction articles that my students can access. It will give them an opportunity to read about current events and master common core standards through quizzes and close reading of the text. It will also broaden their knowledge of life outside Louisiana, as not many of my scholars have the capacity to travel.
I really want my scholars to be able to read the newspaper when they are older and learn about the world through reading.
Right now, they're mostly reading fiction texts and I want them to start loving nonfiction as well. I hope that Time For Kids will be so interesting that they will want to read nonfiction as much as fiction.
