Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in TK/Kindergarten who have non-verbal autism. My students are happy, eager to learn, and adventurous students with autism and speech impairments or communication deficits. Online learning has made teaching students with autism quite challenging since the students can’t always communicate verbally. My students are able to answer yes or no questions, point to letters andsounds, comprehend simple storylines, and follow one-step directions. I'd like to engage my students by using more visuals and movement activities in our program to help facilitate social-emotional development.

My students are all engaged in academic learning through dramatic play centers.

I am requesting the "Veterinarian" dramatic play center which will be my second center. My first center is incredibly educationally impactful. This center will allow students to engage in mathematical skills, language development and promote pragmatic skills.

My students absolutely LOVE animals and learning is so much fun with a furry friend! Students will learn how to take care of animals - food, shelter, compassion, environmental needs, etc., how to utilize a scale, calculate pounds and ounces, measure heights, write prescriptions and care instructions, problem solve, develop vocabulary, understand sequencing skills, develop creativity, etc. all while having FUN! Fun and learning go hand-in-hand and this activity will certainly promote active learning through hands-on manipulatives!

Children who are reluctant to speak or may be more willing to talk during dramatic play centers. Special need students can use the puppets in all subject content, such as English language arts, mathematics, science, history, art, visual performing arts, theater, and physical education. We can sing, count, draw, and act with our puppets. I can model with puppets during online instruction with the students too. Pet Puppets will definitely provide tremulously support for students with special needs in helping to facilitate grade level content while incorporating communication skills.
