Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Go and visit places you've never seen before! Learn about other cultures and develop a better understanding of what our world is all about through real-life photographs, details, descriptions, and historical accounts.
My students come from a diverse background.
Most of the school's population consists of Hispanic and Vietnamese boys and girls from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A handful of students are labeled Special Ed with disabilities ranging from speech to specific learning disabilities. We are part of the California public school system which has seen better days, and I have spent hundreds of dollars personally to support my needy student population.
My Project
I'm requesting 25 subscriptions to TIME for Kids - Grade 2 to assist in meeting the new Common Core Standards. I'm planning on using these resources in a variety of ways including classroom discussions, art-based enrichment projects, researching a specific magazine topic further through technology resources, and improving overall reading comprehension of informational text. Navigating through informational text is quite different than navigating through literature, so I plan on developing mini lessons on non-fiction text organization so that the students can access a variety of other forms of information text.
In keeping current with the new Common Core Standards, I would like to provide my students with engaging non-fiction informational texts.
A magazine format, like TIME for Kids, with colorful photographs and interesting facts, is exactly what my 2nd graders would be drawn to. A love and an excitement for reading is my greatest wish for my students, and exposure to information they might not get to see first-hand will provide experiences that will last a lifetime!
