This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 11 to 14 years old. The majority of my students are minorities from low-income families who want to succeed. State testing show an achievement gap of 30% plus in math, language arts, and science when compared to a higher socioeconomic schools in the same city and district.
These students are smart and can become successful contributors to our world, but they read below grade level and need help.
They will be the future leaders if given this help. They have energy and new ideas they bring with them as well as a wealth of cultural knowledge.
My Project
Research shows that students who read, improve and I want my students to read, read, read. My students will read these non-fiction books to raise up their reading scores. Over 98% of my students are not reading at grade level and 100% are English language learners. Non-fiction is their biggest weakness and we need to focus there.
These class sets of books will be read as a class, discussed, and help my students grow.
Many of these books show diversity to represent my students from many different cultures. This will increase their sense of worth in the world and help them get closer to grade level.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
