Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are Intelligent, engaged, passionate learners. Where they are given room to explore ideas in their reading, writing and research, they flourish! Many are at a special turning point where they are asking “Why?” And looking at the world and their inner selves for the answers. A traditional education doesn’t normally support this search, but I find that self-selected books help. Reading about people with both similar and different experiences, and finding truths in books often interrupt expectations because they create questions that lead to more questions. This search is vital.

My students are developing their interests and passions in a way that will take them beyond the classroom after high school.

They are interested in the world at large, and in social justice. They want to know how to make the world a better place.

My Project

These books will help build out a lean area of my classroom library: non-fiction. Often, students don't think they like non-fiction because they associate it with textbooks. I have selected collections of personal essays, memoirs, autobiographies and informational or self-help texts that relate to my students' identities and interests. From these books they can learn about racial and gender justice, stories about coming out in communities that are unaccepting, how to deal with anxiety and depression or loss. There are stories of people who have tried to succeed, and people who redefined the term. There are stories about survival and joy in the midst of hardship, and research about historical events and the tech or food industry. Most of the texts are by BIPOC authors. They will be so excited to have these books within reach every day in the classroom.

In my class, students read every day.

Independent reading was difficult and mostly lacking for many students for the past year and a half, and I'm looking forward to (with your help) presenting them with shelves of new and interesting books to dive into.
