Non-Fiction Books to Connect the Past With the Present
My students need Real Life stories from non-fiction books to connect with History.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Fobian's classroom raised $656
This project is fully funded
My Students
Encinal Jr. and Sr. High is an amazing school with a student population that is extremely diverse. Our students at Encinal Jr. and Sr. High have the benefit of attending an incredibly diverse school. This allows for students to be exposed to many different cultures and learn from each other. Encinal is the hub for English Learners. We have approximately 22 different ethnicities and just as many languages. Encinal Jr. and Sr. High has a large homeless population and more than half of the student population is eligible for free and reduced lunch. Although many of our students struggle with many daily life challenges, the atmosphere here at school is amazing. The sense of community at Encinal Jr. and Sr. high is incredible. We work hard to support all students with all backgrounds and this is why we are such a great school.
My Project
The history classroom is often filled with information from the past that students often feel is irrelevant to their lives. Non-fiction books(Still I Rise: The Persistence of Phenomenal Women, We Should All Be Feminists and Imprisoned: The Betrayal of Japanese Americans during World War II) can help to bring history alive and peak student interest. The 10th grade Modern World History curriculum focuses on history from Plato to NATO. The books chosen for this project include a variety of topics, people, and events that will directly relate to the students in my class. These books will help students find history more relatable and will encourage healthy reading habits. The main impetus for creating this non-fiction classroom library is because the library at our site is severely outdated, with the vast majority of books dating back 30 years or more. If we are able to obtain funding for this project, over 165 students this school year alone will have the opportunity to read these books and hopefully become excited about learning history.
