Non-fiction Books for Humanities Class

Help me give my students the opportunity to read these books so they can learn and understand how the lives of migrant farmers' children were back then, and hopefully, they can see how important getting an education is.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hello,

My name is Katya Oca Gourley.

I teach Spanish at a bilingual charter school. Also, I teach a humanities class, and I would like my students in this class to read these books by Francisco Jimenez. These books are about his life growing up as a migrant farmer and pursuing his education in one of the highest universities in the country. My school has about 80% Latino students, and most of them are second-generation immigrants.

These books will help my students see how hard the migrant farmer children back then struggled in schools because they couldn't attend it for longer than a couple of months or even a couple of weeks or couldn't attend at all and didn't know English. Also, they worked hard in the fields at an early age with their parents. Whatever money they made in the fields was to help the family buy food and other necessities. Most of the money was to buy food; they didn't have a bed, enough clothes, or shoes, and all their belongings would fit in a carton box to travel to other fields in different states where their parents could find work in the fields.

These books will help all my students tremendously in different ways, such as respect for other cultures, being grateful for what they have, putting more dedication to their studies, and seeing the opportunities they will be ahead in their lives if they dedicate more to their learning.
