My Students

Giving my scholars the tools to access all literature is my #1 priority for the upcoming school year. When choosing books, my scholars always choose fiction books, mostly because I have a slim selection of nonfiction!

My scholars attend an inner city, high performing, creative arts, public elementary school where 97% of the student population receive free lunch.

They are very caring and compassionate scholars who love helping one another and working as hard as they can to have choices later in life. Many of the scholars are extremely invested in reading. They love to read and love when they grow "STEPs" (reading levels, similar to the DRA). My scholars are much better at decoding books than they are comprehending. My scholars this past school year grew an average of 1.6 years of reading in one academic school year. They are funny, loving, and passionate about their educations.

My Project

I'm looking to beef up my library with non-fiction literature. We have enough fiction books to start the new year, but my library is thin in the non-fiction department. I'm looking to purchase a few sets of books. The first set is the Who Was...? series of biographies. They are fun and enjoyable biographies about important people in history from George Washington to The Beatles and include a lot of engaging images and quotes. The second set is a collection of non-fiction books that comes pre-packaged. There are about 55 books in the collection, mostly history and biography. Finally, there is the Geronimo Stilton series of books, which is about a mouse who goes on adventures in historical time periods. It teaches about history using fictional characters and cartoons.

With the struggling economy, my school's budget has been slashed tremendously, and we do not have enough funds to purchase new books for classroom libraries and maintain all other services students were getting.

It's not enough that my scholars read only fiction books. They need experience with non-fiction literature, and I just do not have the means to purchase the books necessary for my classroom.
