Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The school where I teach is very hard to describe. When you see our 'School Report Card,' we are a school that is not achieving in ways our state wants us too. Our test scores aren't that great. But when you walk in the doors, you see a staff that goes above and beyond to help students achieve in anyway possible. Upon closer look, one would see a student population who faces great challenges when they leave school for the day. You would see students of color who live in poverty and may have trauma in their background.

What is also extremely evident is a lack of supplies and learning tools that enable students to reach their full potential.

Our classroom budget is $250, and that includes everything we might need for the year. (There are no free handouts once supplies dwindle.) I have a class of third graders who are begging me to learn and to block out distractions, and this is where we need your help!

My Project

This year (and in years past) I have a chatty class. I consider talking and students positively communicating with one another a good thing while learning, but many students this year have complained about not being able to focus with the quiet talking going on. Our classroom currently has two pairs of noise blocking headphones and they've become a hot commodity this year! When focus on learning starts to wain, they beg me for one of the two pairs. No kid should have to beg to be able to focus on learning!

Every student in my classroom needs access to a pair a noise blocking headphones.

With each scholar having their own pair, they can use them when they feel they need to focus and block out distractions around them. They will always be stored in their desk, so if I see a student struggling to stay on task, I can say, "I see your having a hard time focusing on writing. Why don't you put your headphones on."

Having already seen the headphones in action, I know the simple act of blocking out sounds can make a huge difference to most kids. From math to writing, once they put the headphones on, their focus immediately turns to their task at hand.
