Our classroom is a melange of cultures, ages, and learning styles. We are one of seven multi-age classrooms at a Montessori Pre-K to 6 public elementary school. In this self-motivated learning environment 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders work together and independently to fulfill their need for knowledge. Our learning environment encourages children to explore connections between each person's actions and behavior and the well-being of the universe. Our children are exposed to the wonders of nature whenever possible across all subject areas so that students gain a deeper understanding of our world, and our place in it.
Many students from military families attend our school.
The Montessori philosophy supports and encourages these students to share their life experiences in a safe place while nurturing their emotional and social needs when their families are coping with deployments and other transitions they often experience. Military students are quick to adjust to the self directed style of learning and are eager to dive in to our curriculum that exposes them to the world.
My Project
This trip will begin with a 3 hour scenic school bus ride through the Chugach mountains. The bus ride includes views of different landforms the class has been studying, including glaciers and a drive through a mountain pass. Once we arrive the class will take part in hands on lessons to discover how different marine animals perceive the world around them.
My class will fall asleep with seabirds, Stellar sea lions, and harbor seals.
The class will also get a private tour of the center before it opens to the public. This would be a truly once in a life time experience for this class.
