This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky to be surrounded by 29 energetic, lovable and loving seven year old students every day. As they shake my hand while entering the room each morning, they are filled with questions about what we will be doing during the day and news about what they have been doing since I've seen them last (at 3 o'clock the previous afternoon). The students all live in the urban neighborhood where the school is located. They come from diverse backgrounds speaking English, Spanish, and Creole. About 75% of my class speaks two languages. All my students are eligible for free lunch.

My Project

In a regular school year it is a burden on the families of my students to provide proper school supplies for the year. I often supplement materials by buying shared materials myself. However, in this new age of Covid-19 it is imperative that each child have their own school supplies.

Individual pencil boxes packed with all the supplies my students will need for the year will ease the stress of coming back to school.

I expect that many of my students will be experience significant stress as they return to school. Many have family members who got sick and some have even lost family members due to the pandemic. In addition unemployment is widespread in the community. School supplies should not be something extra to worry about at this time. Please help me set my students up for success during these difficult times.
