My Students
My students are motivated, inspired, hard working, and take their education very seriously. They are 9th and 10th graders who are working towards graduating with an IB diploma.
We are a large, urban high school with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse population of students, and a high level of first-generation college graduates.
Many students lack access to books and reading material in their homes, due to the current shelter in place restrictions in our state, as well as other barriers.
My Project
When we walked out of our school New York school on March 13th with only our backpacks, as we would have on any other Friday, we had no idea we would likely not be heading back to the building for the rest of the year. Now our schools are shuttered, our public libraries are closed, and many of my students are without consistent technology to access books online.
This project would get books in the hands of students who want badly to keep reading during COVID-19, but have many barriers preventing them from having access to books.
This project would get new, high Interest books in the hands of students who lack the ability to leave their homes, visit libraries, or afford new books due to COVID-19 restrictions and closures.
These books will keep our students reading for the rest of the school year and into the summer, as the restrictions on our movement continue. The books will be able to be checked out by students, I will provide front porch drop offs and pick ups, as well as manage the online list of available books for the students to choose from.
