No Reason To Fear...Shakespeare is Here!

My students need two class sets of "Sonnets (No Fear Shakespeare)." Some initial help with Shakespeare's use of language can lead to a true passion for this playwright and poet.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many students enter high school with an in depth knowledge of William Shakespeare. Most of my students start high school on a level one or two and have never come in contact with the Bard. Although they are mesmerized by his themes, his complex use of language is baffling and this is an obstacle.

My public high school is in an urban NY City neighborhood where 85% of the population is Hispanic.

Most of the students enter the school far below the reading level, although they have high educational ambitions. Budgets have been slashed dramatically over the past few years so teachers have to be creative to continually inspire our students. While supplies have become scarcer, our graduation rate rose to a high of 80% last year due to creative educational avenues, such as using donorschoose. By refusing to allow the students to settle for mediocrity, and presenting them with high level literature, our students are continually surpassing our expectations (and even their own). In our heavily immigrant community, many students have had their education disrupted due to moving between countries. They know they have a great deal of ground to make up and are willing to show the effort -- teachers just need the supplies to make certain their goals are actualized.

My Project

I have two classes of students who have passed the NY State English Regents -- the minimum requirement for graduation. These are the leaders of our school and if continually challenged, will all be attending college at the end of next year. Most have spent the last two years learning fundamentals so the beautiful imagery and language of William Shakespeare have not been explored. By using these resources, the language of the Bard will become more assessable to them and they can develop a passion for sonnets. Poetry can serve as an avenue of self expression so my students will be encouraged to write their own poetry in addition to the deep poetic literary exploration that will be done in class. The resources contain the original text alongside an abridged version to use as a study guide. This will help them see Shakespearean language not as an impediment, but as something that must be embraced. Please, help my students get two sets of Sonnets (No Fear Shakespeare) for my classroom.

By making poetry assessable to the students, you are allowing their minds to flourish.

These students have had the five paragraph essay ingrained into their minds for the past years -- exploring high level poetry will foster a sense of creativity and inspire them to fully utilize the English language as they explore identity.
