Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

No Reader Left Behind...be a part of the cause! I am a first grade teacher to 21 students, 2 of which have special needs including autism. We are a public school located in Southern California. We service over 75% second language learners and the vast majority of our students are from low income situations.

Many of my students need visual hands on materials that promote larger vocabularies and comprehension skills. As a school we lack resources in realia. My students are very verbal, but lack academic language as well as vocabulary for common nouns. I believe these materials will broaden their vocabularies, and their imaginations will benefit as well. Imagination is key to reading at this age. As most children are, they're extremely motivated when they have 3 dimensional materials available to them that help them decode.

What they need is simple. Visuals, visuals, visuals. The use of pictures, puzzles and tubs containing miniature objects they can hold will put meaning to the foreign words they are trying to read. Also books that relate to topics that interest them will inspire their desire to read with fluency!

If it truly takes a village to raise a child, let's raise children who can read. You and I are both village members and together we can make a difference in these children's lives. Your help now, at this tender age, will impact their lives forever.
